Brief Job Description

This is a temporary lecturer position in conservation science of works of art and cultural heritage materials for the academic year 2023-2024. The Buffalo State Art Conservation Department seeks a 10-month full-time lecturer to teach conservation science of inorganic materials. The department is one of the few graduate programs in North America offering instruction in the theory and practice of the conservation of works of art and cultural heritage collections. The three-year curriculum leads to the dual award of Master of Arts in Conservation of Art and Cultural Heritage and Master of Science in Conservation Science and Imaging (MA/MS).

Duties include teaching graduate-level lecture and laboratory courses in conservation science of inorganic materials for fall 2023 and spring 2024, performing analyses to support student and faculty conservation treatment and research projects, academic advising of students, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies from late August 2023 through May 2024 (exact dates to be determined).

Required Qualifications

Terminal degree (DSc, PhD) in a physical science, such as chemistry, materials science, physics, or forensics; Experience in inorganic chemistry, materials science of glass, ceramics, metals, and composites; Evidence of a high level of commitment to and experience teaching at the university level; Effective communication skills; Experience working in collaboration with conservators

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in: Optical/polarized light microscopy; Teaching at the graduate level; Postgraduate level conservation science research or research immediately relevant to conservation of art and other objects of material culture; Experience employing Raman and IR spectroscopies, SEM / EDS , XRD , XRF and/or other instrumentation related to the analysis of works of art and cultural heritage; Microchemical testing of materials found in works of art and cultural artifacts
