Description

Company Description

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Are you interested in joining some of the brightest talent in the world to strengthen the United States’ security? Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where our employees apply their expertise to create solutions for BIG ideas that make our world a better place.

We are committed to a diverse and equitable workforce with an inclusive culture that values and celebrates the diversity of our people, talents, ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This is essential to innovation and creativity for continued success of the Laboratory’s mission.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for experienced Sr. Optical Metrology Engineers to support the Optics Metrology Group of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is home to the world’s most powerful and energetic laser. The group is responsible for validating the operation, maintenance, certification, and upgrading of large optic metrology tools located at LLNL, as well as supporting Department of Defense Technology customers with specialized optical metrology needs and R&D projects involving freeform optics. These positions are in the Optics and Materials Science & Technology Program in the NIF and Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate.

In this role, you will
  • Serve as subject matter expert in optical metrology knowledge, techniques, and strategies.
  • Evaluate, monitor and develop the measurement capabilities of large precision metrology instruments used in the production of optical components in collaboration with customers and vendors, identifying and resolving highly complex issues as they arise; may include 24” interferometers, photometers, phase measuring microscopes, stitching interferometers, and automated optical microscopes, spectrophotometers, and group delay dispersion instrumentation.
  • Design and develop optical test methods for custom metrology applications.
  • Design and conduct highly complex experiments to support new large optic metrology instruments as required by the project.
  • Analyze vendor supplied metrology data to validate that manufacturing processes remain in production control and facilitate suppling software to optics vendors using small tool finishing technologies to analyze performance against NIF & PS specifications.
  • Evaluate commercially available photonics/optics components.
  • Analyze highly complex data produced by the instruments to ensure NIF optics are meeting specifications utilizing broadly defined parameters.
  • Document and configure management of optical systems for build and analysis.
  • Recommend upgrade paths to extend metrology tool lifetime for multidecade operations from the perspective of spare part obsolescence or assist in identifying low-cost options for replacement metrology tools to sustain long term metrology support within the NIF & PS Directorate.
  • Mentor operators in safe operating procedures of all systems fielded including leading and directing involved trainings and provide technical oversight and evaluation of the work being done by the project team.
  • Perform and conduct complex evaluation, monitoring, and experiments of large precision metrology instruments including estimating project schedules and project management functions independently and under consultative direction.
  • Oversee and lead metrology process improvement and strategies to increase productivity and quality at NIF optics vendors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optics, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant optical metrology and/or optical fabrication experience.
  • Substantial experience with highly complex optical metrology techniques including interferometric measurements, photometry, spectrophotometry, group delay dispersion, scatter, and radiometry.
  • Highly advanced hands-on experience and knowledge of optical metrology measurements in a production environment including highly complex instrument troubleshooting and data analysis techniques and developing process flow work instructions using measured data.
  • Experience with commercial metrology software packages such as 4Sight, MetroPro, Mx.
  • Knowledge and expertise in IDL, MATLAB, or/and LabView programming.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment which includes scientists, engineers, technicians, and vendors.
  • Expert interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information including providing advice to senior management and/or external partners.
  • Working knowledge of an optical design code (Code V, ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO, or equivalent) to analyze optical metrology configurations for component testing.
  • Highly advanced knowledge and substantial experience in complex evaluation, monitoring, and experiments of large precision metrology instruments including estimating project schedules and project management functions independently and under consultative direction.
  • Subject matter expertise and substantial knowledge in process improvement, highly complex problem resolution, negotiation, and leadership.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Optics, Engineering, and or related experience in optical fabrication and finishing science.
  • Advanced expertise of non-linear optical processes (frequency conversion), laser damage processes and diffraction theory.
  • Experience working with off-site vendors in strategically developing new metrology tools.
  • Significant knowledge and technical experience in the use of CNC sub-aperture tool grinders, CNC sub-aperture tool polishers, and MRF polishing including potential material interactions during grinding and mechanical & chemical polishing.
  • Experience in optics design and manufacturing.
  • Experience in measuring and evaluating optic specifications (scratch/dig, wavefront, power spectral density (PSD), roughness, and Zernike terms).
