Job Description

The Packaging Systems & Design program, housed in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech, invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Packaging. This is a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment with primary responsibilities in teaching (50%) and research (50%). We seek a dynamic candidate with research interests in areas of sustainable packaging, including but not limited to, protective- and distribution-packaging design, packaging-manufacturing and -automation, logistics, and supply chains. The selected candidate will complement the current packaging program's strengths: sustainable packaging materials, unit-load packaging and design, circular economy, protective packaging, and packaging business and marketing.

The ultimate goal of this position is to increase the overall efficiency, resiliency, sustainability, and economic value of packaging in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. It will expand Virginia Tech's global influence in this rapidly evolving domain. The selected candidate will be expected to enhance the interdisciplinary program through collaboration with interconnected faculty, partners, and industrial stakeholders and to secure funding from local, national and international sources. Opportunities exist in the following programs for cross-disciplinary collaboration within Virginia Tech, including but not limited to, affiliations with the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design (CPULD), Macromolecules Innovation Institute (MII), Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), and the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT).

The successful individual is expected to conduct scholarly activities, including but not limited to, research, scholarly publication, service, and teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses as required by the department. Advising and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students is also required. Service to the Department, College, University and Profession is expected.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in packaging science or a relevant scientific area, including but not limited to, chemical engineering, food science, forest products, industrial system engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, wood science, or related field of study, by the time of appointment.

Demonstrated actions or plans to create and/or contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

Ability and interest in scholarly activities surrounding the development of teaching lectures, labs, and hands-on experiential learning courses in packaging, and/or closely related content areas.

Ability to perform and collaborate in research with state or federal agencies, foreign governments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), private industry, or some combination of these groups.

Potential to attract research funding adequate to support an active research program, including graduate students.

Demonstrated ability to publish and communicate research in the peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentations.

Position requires occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the university level; multiple years of teaching experience will be preferred.

Demonstrated record of research, teaching, and mentoring/addressing the needs of under-represented communities, including racial, ethnic, and religious minorities, immigrants, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) individuals.

Postdoctoral research or equivalent experience; particularly in packaging development, evaluation, and testing.

Experience advising and directing the research of undergraduate and/or graduate students.
